BORIS ZHUTOVSKY

Was born in 1932 in Moscow.

After finishing of the educational and art school he entered the Moscow Polygraphic Institute, faculty of book artists, class of professor A.Goncharov and I.Chekmazov (pupil of V.Kandinsky). This period was marked by significant influence of D. Arhangelsky, oldest painter and pedagogue. After graduation from the Institute he worked in Ural, in Sverdlovsk.

In 1957 he returned to Moscow, where he has been working till now in various publishing houses of Moscow as the illustrator and the designer of books.

From the end of the 1950th to 1962 - worked in E.Belutin's studio.

Since 1959 – began to expose his works at the exhibitions of paintings and graphical arts in the USSR, and then in various museums and galleries of the world.

After participation in the exhibition  "30 years of MOSKh" in Manezh in December, 1962 and personal scandal with Nikita Khrushchev he was prohibited to participate in the USSR exhibitions.

Since 1964-1965 – wide display of his works worldwide in the galleries and museums: Helsinki (Finland), Toronto (Canada), Rome, Florence, Venice, Akkuily (Italy), Prague, Bratislava, the Mouth over Orlitsa (Czechoslovakia), Gdansk, Sopot, Poznan, Zeleny Gura (Poland), Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Bochum (Germany), Barcelonas (Spain), Lugano, Zurich (Switzerland), Paris, Montero (France), London (England), Leipzig (GDR), New York, Los Angeles (USA).

Since 1979 – exhibitions of the modern art in Moscow in semi-legal halls in Bolshaya Gruzinskaya Street have renewed. Except for last years it was impossible and dangerous to sale Boris’s paintings in Russia. Therefore he illustrated books and made design works for book to earn his living. In this field he has been far-famed and awarded.

In 1969 Zhutovsky was admitted to the Union of Artists of the USSR as an artist of books and participated in many exhibitions of book art in the USSR and abroad.

In 1979 – the personal exhibition of paintings took place in Gdansk (Poland). He had to make that works on the spot, in Gdansk, as it was the time when the paintings were forbidden for export abroad.

In 1965 Zhutovsky was awarded the medal at the festival "Zlata Grona" in a Zeleny Gura (Poland) and at an exhibition "Alternative to Attual II" in Akkuila in Italy. In 1972 – at the exhibition in the gallery of Huan Miro in Barcelona. In 1982 he was granted the Diploma IBA-82, Leipzig (GDR).

In 1988 his three pictures were purchased for the Ludwig's museum in Keln (FRG) - "MEMORY. POLAND". 1965: In memory of victims of Osventsim. In memory of Polish soldiers. In memory of Jews in Treblinka.
