Richard Gay Somerset (1848-1928) – British landscape painter, Vice-President of the Royal College of Art, Vice-President of the Royal Cambrian Academy, member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, member of the Manchester Society of Oil Painters. Somerset was born at Manchester in 1848. He received his early artistic training at the Manchester School of Art, of which institution he became a student in 1865, and for four years studied from the antique. During three following years he painted in France and Italy. Paintings displayed in Manchester City Art Gallery and Rochdale Art Gallery. Exhibited 18 paintings at the Royal Academy, 133 paintings at the Royal College of Art, 63 at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Also exhibited at Birmingham Royal Society of Artists, Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery, New Gallery, and The Royal Society of British Artists. Somerset is one of the principal painters of the Manchester school.
